Arma Android Development

Postby Firefly_AS » Mon Sep 23, 2013 2:19 am

There's been some discussion about connecting your Android phone/tablet to Arma. I finally cleaned up what I worked on and posted it here:

Right now we have the Arma2NET plugin, a mod for Arma 3, and a simple Android application that connect together. The system uses your local wireless network. It sends out a UDP broadcast and then the phone picks it up so you don't have to specify a manual IP address or anything which is nice.

Arrr! Late as usual.

Here are my immediate thoughts. We need assistance with the dialog aspects. I have people in mind, Rio is among them if he is willing/able on the ArmA side. The GPS/compass/altitude is need for the larger projects and I think reasonable enough tasks to run with. Anything else is awesoome, but not needed I don't think.

Having an open/moddable interface should be a priority as with everything. That way the others can do as they like, and hopefully improve upon the base.

Hopefully we can catch up soon and chat about it. I've been pretty busy, but will be around through the weekend.

Well, essentially right now it just sends strings which work fine. The part that I don't know much about is the Android side. Well, and I suppose there could be an Arma side as well, maybe a GUI version of it for people who don't have a phone or tablet? Maybe we could chat on TS sometime. I'm pretty busy so I don't really have time to learn the Android side and how to make it pretty or do pinch and zoom and stuff... :)

Played around a little more and I think I found a good 3rd party Android library for doing super high res images and scaling properly.

Can someone who has the BI Tools installed extract the maps PBO and convert the terrain image .paa file to a .png for Altis and Stratis and put them somewhere that I could download (Teamspeak or dropbox or something)? Hatchet did this for me awhile back but this was before the final release and I only have one map at the moment. The Stratis one is 8192x8192 dimension I think... That would be super helpful. Thanks.

You mean assemble the gazillion smaller images like a puzzle to form the huge Altis map picture ?
I'll pass :) Maybe this will help, found it googling "Altis map":

I thought there was a single large image, but I'm not sure. I'll ask Hatchet next time he's on. :)

Apparently there are a bunch of smaller images that need to be stitched together. I have a simple Android app working, will need testers. Get with me on Teamspeak and I can show you how to set it up if you're interested in helping to test.

If anyone has an Android device, I would appreciate testers. Just copy the pre-built @Arma2NET and @Arma2NETConnect mods folders and launch Arma 3. Install the .apk file on your Android device (make sure to allow third party apps in the settings). The only map is Stratis at the moment.

I'm not 100% sure on the networking side yet (it works for me). If it doesn't work, let me know / paste logs if you can.

There's a map view that has zoom functionality and shows your position and orientation on the map. Currently only Stratis is in the application, but others can be added easily. The other current feature shows the date and time. Basically, I need help testing the networking side at the moment so if you have an Android and have a few minutes to try it, I would really appreciate it. If you need help for a walk-through of the installation let me know and I can hop on TS.

Installed mods in arma root, installed app on android, launched game with stratis. Get message waiting for arma game connection. Game probably did not launch with the arma mods.

Help appreciated!
